The Bloomberg Student Center at Johns Hopkins University is a landmark mass timber project designed as a vibrant hub for student life, connection, and collaboration. The terraced structure responds to its steep Baltimore site through 29 distinct cascading volumes, combining glulam columns and beams with Dowel-Laminated Timber (DLT) roof panels and CLT shear walls to create a warm, highly expressive structural system. The complex timber geometry required precise coordination across varying roof slopes, cantilevers, glazing, structural connections, and integrated building systems. Beyond its architectural impact, mass timber supports the university’s sustainability and biophilic design goals, while photovoltaic arrays across the roofscape are designed to generate approximately 40% of the center’s annual energy needs. The result showcases how sophisticated mass timber construction can unite structural performance, sustainability, and architectural design to create an inviting centerpiece for campus life.
